Product Review - The High Wheel Cultivator

Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator 6500

Sometimes called the wheel hoe, The Earthway 6500 High Wheel Cultivator is an indispensable tool in our garden!  If the thought of growing a bigger garden brings to mind weeds, weeds and more weeds, then let me introduce you to this wonderful tool!

It is by far the best weeder we have had and using it is pretty simple!  We gave ours a rather large workout these last three years.  Last year, our market garden was over 4 acres, and the wheel hoe did it's job.

There are other, more expensive wheel hoes out there, but if you have a home garden, not a market garden, I do believe that this wheel hoe would be good enough.   A couple of it's screws came out last year only because we were using it a little too hard.

The cultivator attachment that you see above is not what we use.  You can get other attachments along with the wheel hoe.  Our favorite by far is the stirrup attachment!  Watch this video below from Johnny's Seeds.  Although this shows a more expensive wheel hoe, the concept is the same.  Notice the attachment is a stirrup or slicing hoe which goes underneath the soil and cuts the root of the weed.  It breaks it with little effort!

This hoe will not cultivate untilled land, but it will keep your rows looking nice and neat!  Although a regular handheld hoe has it's place in the garden, when weeding and cultivating in between rows, there is no comparison!  The best time to tackle weeds with this hoe is before they get too big.  Once the the weeds are overgrown, then you will have to pull them by hand.

Amazon has a good price on these wheel hoes right now.  The second hoe has wooden handles.

Although not as high quality as some of the more expensive wheel hoes, I give it a 4 out of 5.  This is one tool you can't do without!

  2. I was wondering the same thing as Clint. But I do know this to be a good tool and one that is pretty easy to use unless you have compacted soil.
