How to Make Glycerin-Free Toothpaste

When I first started making my own toothpaste, I was so pleased!  I no longer was dependent on the grocery store to provide me with expensive toothpaste that contained fluoride or even the more expensive fluoride-free toothpaste.

Remember, small steps to self-sufficiency are key!

But, my bubble was bursted when I read how glycerin coats our teeth, not allowing saliva to remineralize our teeth.  Well, don't you hate it when that happens.  Just when you think you are doing something good, you read how it isn't good and could possibly be causing some damage.

I have read conflicting stories on whether or not it really does demineralize teeth, but it was enough to put a little doubt in my mind.  So, here is a new recipe that is glycerin-free, followed by my old one that includes glycerin.  For those who do not believe that glycerin could be evil, the latter one is for you!

Glycerin-Free Toothpaste

1/4 cup baking soda
1/8 cup hydrogen peroxide
1/8 cup coconut oil
1/2 tsp peppermint extract

Mix ingredients all together and store in an airtight container or baggy.  You can also add 1/4 tsp of stevia for a sweeter flavor.

Toothpaste with Glycerin

6 tsp baking soda
1/3 tsp salt
4 tsp glycerin
15 drops peppermint

Mix ingredients all together and store in an airtight container or baggy.  Again, you can add 1/4 tsp of stevia for a sweeter flavor.

Now, let's hope that no one comes out with more negative reviews on these toothpaste ingredients!

  1. This is an interesting recipe for toothpaste. I use a recipe I got from the Bulk Herb store, but it looks so nasty in the jar. Anyway, I might just give this one a try. Thanks for sharing.

  2. What does the peppermint extract do? Is it essential for this or for flavor? I cannot use it.

    1. It is just for a minty flavor. You do not need it:)
