Since I have made this video, I do make a formaldehyde/paraben free lotion using optiphen.

  1. Although I live in the city now, we used to farm and we had goats--miss them a lot.
Wish I had seen your blog back then. Would LOVE to try to make both the soaps and the lotions.

  2. I am so excited. I just made my first batch of lotion according to your instructions! I might give the soap a try at some point. Thanks!

  3. I finally got around to watching the soap making video. Thank you for pointing out why NOT to add the lye quickly into the milk. I always wondered why mine always turned orange! Do you mean rubbing alcohol (to spray on at the end)?

  4. So glad you are learning from the videos! Enjoy your new handmade products!

Jessica, use rubbing alcohol to spray on top of the soap while it is still in the mold. Hope that helps!

  5. What a great video! I can't wait to try making my own soap but I'm stumped about the curing time. How long does it need to cure?

  6. Well goodness sake! I love your little farm, we have gotten two goats Lucy and Gleem. Hoping to be able to help or encourage my husband. Maybe he won't have to work at the mill forever. Thank you for the expressed love for our Lord. God bless!

  7. THANK YOU for the videos, by far the best and most informative I have seen. We began our little farm journey in December moving to 2.5 acres and 4 months later we now have 7 boer goats, 9 dairy goats 3 lambs and 88 chickens. LOVING IT!!!!! I have been wanting to make soap and was just not confident yet, but after watching your videos I am ready to head to the kitchen now. God Bless you and your family, what a great website, I'll be back!

  9. liquid hand soap and bar soap is carefully formulated using safe, effective ingredients.
Because most people have turned to liquid soap rather than bar soap I figured there must be a way to convert the cheap bar soap.

  10. Good video! Been making soap for a while now... love my goats and love having soap made here at home so that I know EXACTLY what's in it. I do, however, have two words for you... STICK BLENDER!!!! Will cut down your work AND your time to saponification without compromising the recipe and the adding of the ingredients in order. You can buy the stick blenders for less than $20 at Walmart or some other discount store. Makes a WORLD of difference.
    God bless!

    1. I have used the stick blender before, but I prefer the blender. To me it seemed to mix better than the stick blender. Either way, it sure is better than stirring for 4 hours;)

  11. How long is the shelf life for the soaps and lotions??? Looks like fun I can't wait to try them out!

    1. The soaps can last almost forever! The lotion with the preservative is supposed to be labeled with an expiration date 3 months later if you are selling it. But I've had some last for a year.

  12. Can you use the lotion as a face moisturizer? Thank you for sharing your recipes for soap and lotion. I also enjoy your website. :)

  13. You sure can use them as a facial moisturizer. I do! If you have used unnatural moisturizer on your face before, you will feel a little itchy for a few days because your face will not be used to the natural lotion. After you get used to it, it is quite nice! Glad you are enjoying Our Simple Farm!

  15. Hi! Your soap looks wonderful! Thanks for the video - I had just tried making goat milk soap before watching this video. I started out with frozen gm and added lye. The temperature never reached more than 60-65 F. Is this too cold to mix with oils? My soap turned out nice and creamy in color but not sure if the saponification process will continue properly. Thanks for any input.

  17. HI! I have only watched these videos without sound because my speaker is broken on my computer (I will be heading to a friends house to see them!) Did you make any mention of a natural preservative to put in the lotion? I would like to give it a try but I'd like it to last without putting it in the fridge. Thank you!
